Chinese Dragons
The Dragon holds a special place in Chinese culture. For this reason, we are giving it a page all its own. While people in the West are now rediscovering the beneficial powers of dragon energy, in the East, the dragon has long been revered. Up until quite recently, the dragon in Western folklore has been mostly a negative and frightening creature. In China, the emperors were considered descendants of a noble race of dragons (as an aside, some modern fringe and conspiracy theorists, such as David Icke believe that there really is a reptilian alien race who has influenced Earth's history mostly in a negative way, and that this is the inspiration for dragon tales). So dragons in ancient China, and later Japan and other Asian lands, have long been symbols of power, nobility and prosperity. There is also the Dragon sign in Chinese astrology. This sign, which people born in years such as 1964, 1976, 1988, etc. (going back or forward every 12 years) are fortunate enough to be born under, is associated with a powerful, magnetic and lucky person. Interestingly enough, the year 2012, which many believe marks the end of a major cycle (though this is borrowing from a different astrology, that of the Mayans) is a dragon year. Chinese martial arts, which is largely based on animal movements, also has dragon forms...recall what is probably Bruce Lee's most famous film, Enter The Dragon. While all of the other animal forms used by martial artists, which include preying mantis, various birds and tigers, are "real," the dragon is the only "mythical" animal to inspire martial arts forms. It makes one wonder if ancient martial artists were not inspired by actual creatures, as their forms are certainly not merely imaginative musings. There has been much speculation about the meaning and origin of Chinese Dragons in art and folklore. Whatever the history and spiritual significance of dragons, today they are a great source of inspiration for artists and fantasy writers. With the popularity of feng shui, they are also reappearing as symbols of prosperity. There are many ways to incorporate the energy and vitality of dragons into your life.
